What is Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing is the Latest Buzzword in the Computer Market . If you know what Web Hosting is then you know that when your Website is not being viewed by anybody even then you have to pay at a flat rate to the Web Hosting Provider say for e.g. 20$ per month . And what If suddenly the traffic goes up to a certain limit . You will sure upgrade but maximum you can have is a dedicated Server . I am sure there may be another options but the point i am making is clear I think . Even If your Server sits Idle during Night you are paying for it . Enter Cloud Computing .

Speaking in Layman terms , It is basically same thing as Web Hosting . So , this Cloud Web Hosting is provided by many Companies like Amazon ( EC2 Elastic Compute Cloud )  , 3Tera , GoGrid and Force.com .

Lets pick that EC2 from Amazon . So , say now your Website has been moved from a Web Hosting Company to Amazon EC2 . Now , During Night Time nobody is visiting your WebSite . So you dont pay anything to Amazon . When people are visiting your WebSite your Price is calculated accordingly . So , say you wrote something like a Harry Potter Novel and suddenly whole world is flocking to your Door ( WebSite ) , If it is Amazon then they will elastically scaleup ( or add more computers ) to meet the rise in Web Traffic . You only pay for the addtional Computing power you are using during that time .  Thats just an Example . Imagine what would have happened If your Site was hosted on a Traditional Web Hosting Company .

So , for quickly setting up an Enterprise Level Infrastructure with minimum Investment , Cloud Computing is the way to go , definitely .

Wow cool man . Great article .
I too came to read and know something about cloud recently .
A good example is paying for electricity bill or telephone or something like that . Pay only for what you use.

Yes Hari Telephone and Electricity is definitely a good example to tell to Freshers . Ill keep that in Mind :) . Also , I dont knw Why I forgot Google when mentioning Cloud Computing . Google also provides its infra-structure for runnig your Web-Applications like Simple Informational Websites or Big Enterprise Applications which may need occasional scale-up . Its called Appengine .

http://code.google.com/appengine/

But it can run websites(webapps) made in Python and Java only . No PHP or .NET sorry :(
